RUSHKOFF:
IF ROSS PEROT CAN COME IN, AND REALLY SHAKE UP THE POLITICAL
SYSTEM BY ANNOUNCING HIS CANDIDACY ON TALK TELEVISION, THEN
IT MEANS THAT THE WAY WE'VE BEEN DOING BUSINESS AS USUAL,
IN THE POLITICAL CAMPAIGN ARENA, IS VULNERABLE TO ATTACK
FROM THE OUTSIDE; AND IF IT'S THAT VULNERABLE TO ATTACK,
IT'S BECAUSE IT ISN'T WORKING THAT WELL ANYMORE.

Are
college students lazy and selfish and apathetic? Not according
to Paul Loeb! |

LOEB:
...BIG BOOM IN THE COMMUNITY SERVICE MOVEMENT! ALL SORTS
OF PEOPLE INVOLVED IN LITERACY PROGRAMS AND VOLUNTEERING,
AND WORKING WITH THE HOMELESS; LOTS OF NEAT STUFF LIKE THAT
GOING ON.

Those
of us born after 1950 were born into the world of television.
We were spoonfed ideas, opinions, products - indeed, an entire
culture as we sat and watched. It's only natural that this
generation would develop ways to talk back to the television.
Remote controls, call-in shows, faxes and email are fast creating
interactive media. Our next guest has given a great deal of
thought to these changes, and the way they affect our lives.
His new book is titled, Media Virus: Hidden Agendas in
Popular Culture. Doug Rushkoff, welcome to The
Source Report. |

Today's
generation of college students and 20-somethings have been
called a lot of unflattering names - apathetic, selfish,
amoral, greedy - all summed up as "Generation X."
Journalist Paul Loeb took exception to these characterizations.
Loeb interviewed students on more than 100 college campuses,
and took part in protests, marches, and political rallies
of all kinds. The result is a book called, Generation
at the Crossroads: Apathy and Action on the American Campus.
Paul Loeb, thanks for joining us on the Source Report.
