About Our Attendees

In 2002, attendees came to ISPI from 46 US states, 6 Canadian provinces and 23 countries.

  • Forty percent are employed in Training Departments.
  • Thirty percent are External Consultants in Training and/or Workplace Performance Improvement.
  • Thirty percent are employed in Human Resource Development, Organizational Development, Program Management, Project Management, Sales and Marketing, University Instruction or an unspecified position.
  • More than half of those internally employed (non-consultants) are Vice Presidents, Directors or Managers.

According to survey responses, what these individuals had in common was a near unanimous desire to learn new workplace performance tools and technologies and to stay current in the theories and practices of performance improvement and training. They were nearly unanimous, also, in their desire to effectively link theory, research and practice. They sought information and skills of value on the job. In addition, the overwhelming majority expressed the desire to develop professional contacts.

If this sounds like you, then be sure to join your colleagues from around the World, in Boston, April 10-15, 2003 for an ISPI Institute or Workshop and the 41st Annual International Performance Improvement Conference and Exposition.

"The ISPI conference is the only opportunity that I have each year to ensure that I am at the leading edge in the performance improvement field. I have never left a conference disappointed that I didn't experience every opportunity to learn about and experience the latest developments in the field. Thank you."

Christine Westover, Associate Director
Performance & People Development
Pfizer Canada Inc.

"ISPI has provided me with added value to pursue a more professional approach to my job role. It has exposed me to the leading figures in Human Performance Technology throughout the world and enlightened me to how we should all operate in our profession."

David Burns, General Manager, Corporate Programs
DeakinPrime - A Division of Deakin University, Australia

In Their Own Words

Our 2002 Attendees, On the Value and Benefits of Attending

Walgreens' Karen Preston is one of many attendees who believe the value of the Conference is in the applicability of information to their company's core business needs. Karen says, "The conference offered brand-new research, which was directly translated into business-relevant recommendations and applications."

Susan Hughes, Senior Instructional Technologist for a major facilities management firm, seems to agree with Karen. In addition, Susan feels the conference was motivating. "Each 90 minute session offered me an "AH-HA" moment. I was able to make an immediate connection between the subject and my practice. I came back to work armed with information and motivation to improve how I perform my job."

For Ivan Cortes of Citibank, the value is in the solid reliability of the practices he learned at the Conference. "The ISPI conference offers proven Performance Technology practices based in theory and research. No 'snake-oil' models without demonstrable results."

Karen Smith-Will, Senior Multimedia Specialist in Learning and Performance Support at Capital One did the math and came up with her own value equation of Ideas + Tools = Positive ROI. "In a word, the 2002 ISPI Conference was 'powerful.' I have returned to my company with forward-thinking ideas to present company-wide and tools to implement them." Furthermore, says Karen, "I feel confident in guaranteeing a return on Capital One's investment."

The Conference's value lies in the insights derived from the diversity of ISPI speakers and attendees, says Chris Voelkl, Senior Consultant, E&E Information Consultants. "They not only come from different areas within our field but also from different countries and cultures respectively. It provides me with new insights into what's important in our people business."

Many attendees comment on the value of the excellent speakers, stimulating discussions and networking.  Certified Performance Technologist, Jim Momsen of Genesis 10 found value in all of these factors. Furthermore, Jim's experience illustrates how ISPI provides non-stop opportunities for each and every attendee to participate fully in the discussion and exchange of ideas and information. "The speakers and presenters were great…I made many new friends and contacts through the lively discussions and conversations at the sessions, Cracker Barrel and the Exposition Floor…. I'd recommend the ISPI Conference and Exposition to anyone who deals with improving human performance."

How Does ISPI Provide All This Value?

You can tell by reading the attendee comments throughout this page that the benefits of attending - to you and your employer or clients - are substantial. There are many good reasons for that.

A Cornerstone in Human Performance Technology

The goal of every ISPI Conference is to help you improve individual and organizational performance and enable you to build and maintain a performance-based organization through a systematic, measurable, and reproducible methodology known as Human Performance Technology (HPT). HPT provides you with the means to align your Human Resources, Organizational Development, Quality or Training Department with the "business" of your organization.

Specifically, Human Performance Technology is a systematic combination of performance analysis, cause analysis, intervention selection and design, intervention implementation and change, and evaluation. HPT is designed to most cost-effectively influence human behavior and accomplishment. Human Performance Technology can be applied to individuals, small groups, and large organizations. For a more thorough explanation and graphical representation of the Human Performance Technology model, visit the Human Performance Technology page on the ISPI Website.

Careful Topic Selection

Experienced performance improvement professionals on ISPI volunteer boards select session topics based on their first-hand understanding of the needs of today's employee training, human resources, organizational development and performance improvement professionals.

The Most Qualified Speakers

ISPI Presenters are groundbreaking pioneers and leaders in research and practical application of performance improvement methodologies. Our speakers are a wellspring of first-hand, critical information they have collected and analyzed from original research designed to improve performance and productivity in organizations like yours.

Diversity of Experience

You will not hear "one-size-fits-all" solutions at an ISPI Conference. Presenters and attendees alike bring a wide range of views and solutions to each Conference.

You Can Engage and Network with Experts and Peers

ISPI speakers do not have a limousine or corporate jet waiting to swoop them away, so your access to expert presenters does not end at the session room door. Concurrent session presenters are asked to attend the entire three-day meeting as active participants. You may corner your 1pm speaker in the corridor, lavish your 10am speaker with lunch, or find yourself in an impromptu session with speakers and attendees in the bookstore or exhibit hall. You will experience information-sharing and networking at its best!

You Will Have Every Opportunity for Active Participation

The ISPI Conference is not a spectator event! We offer a number of concurrent sessions in each time slot in the hope of ensuring a small group setting in each session. We do this to give you the opportunity to participate and be heard in each session you attend.

In addition, we offer you an excellent Exposition, the Cracker Barrel round-table discussions, the Performance Gallery poster sessions, 99 Seconds Presentations, and GOT RESULTS? 2003 (a showcase of several dozen performance improvement projects with measured results). And don't forget the coffee breaks and Closing Banquet. You will have every opportunity to keep the discussion, debate and learning alive long after the concurrent sessions end.

The Conference Lives On

You can benefit from sessions you don't even attend! Conference handouts and audio from the majority of sessions are captured on CD-ROM. With this tool, you may review the sessions you attended, "sit-in" on those you missed, and share the Conference with your colleagues long after the event is over. As an attendee, you will enjoy substantial discounts on the CD-ROM and other performance improvement products.

"The ISPI Conference was one of the most valuable that I've attended. The sessions were of the highest caliber. I am using knowledge and skills gained immediately. I am delighted that I renewed my membership in ISPI."

Vicki Atkinson, Senior Consultant, Certified, IBM Corporation
