What
Is the CPT Designation?
The letters "CPT" following a person's name stand for "Certified
Performance Technologist." This certification is awarded by the
International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI) to experienced
practitioners in the field of organizational performance improvement
whose work meets performance-based certification Standards and requirements
developed by ISPI.
|
Why
Was the Certification Developed?
Until ISPI developed Standards and criteria, anyone could claim to
be a professional in performance improvement. For years, employers
and clients have asked for standards and criteria to help them distinguish
performance improvement practitioners who have proven they can produce
measurable results through a systematic and reproducible process.
At the same time, performance improvement practitioners have asked
for a standardized means to assess their ability, better focus their
professional development efforts, and recognize their full capability.
It was in response to these needs of employers, clients and performance
improvement professionals that the International Society for Performance
Improvement (ISPI) recently developed the Certified Performance Technologist
(CPT) certification.

How
Can Certification As A CPT Benefit Me?
When you become an ISPI Certified Performance
Technologist, you demonstrate to employers and clients that your work
has met standards and criteria, as evidenced in your professional
endeavors, that distinguish you as a performance improvement practitioner
who has a proven understanding of what it takes to produce desired,
measurable results through a systematic and reproducible process.
Once certified, your
name will be listed on a registry that will be available to potential
clients and employers. While the certification is neither an endorsement
of you for future work nor a guarantee of future performance, the
CPT can help further your candidacy for jobs and contracting opportunities
as prospective employers and clients come to understand that you
have proven your proficiency in performance improvement.

How Is ASTD
Involved?
On November 8, The
American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) announced its
affiliation with ISPI in offering the CPT to ASTD members. This
affiliation will ensure a single set of Standards and a single Certification
for performance improvement professionals certified by either organization.
"ASTD is pleased to affiliate with ISPI on this prestigious
performance certification," said Tina Sung, ASTD President
and CEO. "By pooling the resources of ISPI and ASTD, this certification
helps members of both organizations better demonstrate their professional
capabilities and expertise to their employer or clients," she
noted.
While applicants
can apply through either ISPI or ASTD, ISPI will be responsible
for reviewing all applications, deciding if the Standards have been
met, and granting the certification.

What
Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Eligibility requirements can be met in either of two ways.
During the period
ending on October 1, 2003, qualified candidates with six or more
years of experience in the field of performance improvement may
become certified through a "grandparenting" process. Either
the candidate must submit attestations from an internal/external
client or supervisor that his or her work has demonstrated proficiency
in all 10 Standards, or the candidate must be an ISPI Award of Excellence
recipient or finalist (between 1990-2003) or the recipient of an
approved ISPI Chapter award.
For all other candidates,
the eligibility requirements include three years of experience in
performance improvement, a description of work performed in a manner
that demonstrates the use of each of the ten CPT Standards at least
two to three times, and attestations from an internal/external client
or supervisor.
All candidates must
commit to a Code of Ethics. All documentation received from all
candidates are reviewed by a qualified reviewer. Once certified,
performance improvement professionals must apply for re-certification
every three years to maintain their CPT status.
Membership in ISPI
or ASTD is not required. Completion of a formal training or education
program is not required.

| Tell
Me About the Ten Standards
ISPI created a special
task force in November 2000, led by then ISPI President-elect, Dr.
Judith Hale, to develop the Standards and requirements for certification.
Task force members represented business, government, academia and
independent practitioners.
The resulting Standards
ensure that the Certified Performance Technologist has conducted
his or her work in a manner that focuses on results, is systemic
in scope and systematic in process, adds value, utilizes partnerships
or collaboration, includes assessment of need, includes analysis
and identification of limiting factors, and includes design, development,
implementation and evaluation of solutions.

| Tell
Me About the Code of Ethics
The Code of Ethics
is intended to promote ethical practice in the profession. In order
to be certified or re-certified, the applicant must sign a statement
of agreement with the principles on which the Code is based. The
Code of Ethics is based on six principles that guide the performance
improvement process: adding value, using validated practices, collaborating
with others, continuously improving ones proficiency, demonstrating
integrity, and upholding confidentiality.
